2019 One Great Hour of Sharing Special Mission Offering
Envelopes Available on Sunday, April 14

One Great Hour of Sharing, a part of Our Church’s Wider Mission (OCWM), is one of the four special mission offerings of the United Church of Christ. One Great Hour of Sharing provides support for health, education, refugee, agricultural and emergency relief initiatives to people in 138 countries around the world by working with local, national, and global partners. This appeal is the oldest special mission offering of the UCC, having started in 1949. For seven decades, nine denominations in the United States, united as one, have together been connecting people through the One Great Hour of Sharing offering.

One Great Hour of Sharing enables the United Church of Christ to reach people and communities affected by disaster, displacement or poverty. Through One Great Hour of Sharing, we provide assistance to families and communities around the world, helping them to become stronger, healthier and better equipped to address hardships and catastrophes.

The 2019 One Great Hour of Sharing offering theme is “More Than We Can Imagine.”

It is easy to feel overwhelmed when we look at all the areas of need in God’s world: there is hunger, sickness, and injustice in so many communities. It is easy to feel there is nothing we can do to help. We can feel trapped by hopelessness and fear that what little we can do won’t have an impact.

As the Apostle Paul writes, “by the power at work within us,” God is able to “accomplish abundantly more than we can ask or imagine” (Ephesians 3:20).
“We are the agents of transformation that God uses to transfigure this world” (Archbishop Desmond Tutu).

Wishing and dreaming of a better world means nothing if we don’t realize that God gives us community to practice love and compassion. We cannot only care for ourselves, but we must also care about those around us, both near and far.

Our gifts become part of a loving legacy in ways we can’t foresee. Our gifts become blessings to people we don’t know and blesses in ways we can’t expect. We can make a difference beyond what we can imagine. Please give generously to this vital mission!

Our children will receive OGHS boxes and “Sharing Calendars” the first Sunday of Lent for different daily collection of coins that remind us of what we already have and what others desperately need. Grown-ups are welcome to join in this activity, too! Please see Pastor Sarah for materials.

P.S. Remember that our participation in this One Great Hour of Sharing appeal (and in the other three special mission offerings as well as our regular OCWM giving) will help us to qualify again as a “Five-For-Five Congregation” in 2019!

Each year One Great Hour of Sharing produces its Annual Mission Report to highlight the work of the offering.
