Pentecost: the Birthday of the Church
Sunday, June 4, 2017

“When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place. And suddenly from heaven there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting.” (Acts 2:1-4)

The word means “Fiftieth Day,” and, not coincidently, takes place fifty days after Easter Day. In the tradition of the Church, it is the day we celebrate its birth. When we read the story, we learn that the church was shaped and formed by the Holy Spirit. The Spirit moved the disciples with energy, passion, and strength. It also enabled them, in their diversity of languages and cultures, to understand each other and work together. What a wonderful image for the church of today! We, too, continue to be shaped and formed by the Spirit. It continues to infuse us with energy, passion, and strength. And finally, it brings us the gift of unity in diversity, reminding us that God’s children are all created uniquely, yet called to work and live and care for each other in community.

Come celebrate our birthday! On June 4, we will celebrate Pentecost in the 10:30 service. The service will be filled with the music of our choirs, as well as congregational hymns that offer praise to the Holy Spirit. We invite all to wear the colors of this festive day – the colors of the Spirit’s fire – red, orange, or yellow. Come and praise the Spirit of God in joy and thanksgiving!
